Sustainability
"The science is clear: we need to halve our emissions by 2030 to deliver a zero-carbon world in time. This requires immediate action from across the world, by the largest governments and the smallest companies. The partnership between the UK government and the SME Climate Hub will accelerate the adoption of net-zero business practices and bring companies of all sizes into the critical Race to Zero".
UK High Level Climate Action Champion for COP26 Nigel Topping

My Sustainability Commitment
At North Star Tuition, I care deeply about the world our children are growing up in; and that includes how we look after the planet. As a one-person business working in film and TV, I might be small in size, but I believe every decision counts.

I’m taking steps to make my work more environmentally friendly and to support productions in being more sustainable too - especially when young people are involved. My approach is practical, thoughtful, and evolving all the time.
What I’m Working On
Right now (the next 12 months):
-
I’m tracking the impact of my travel so I can understand my carbon footprint better.
-
I’m choosing virtual meetings and check-ins wherever possible to cut down on unnecessary travel.
-
I use suppliers who care about the environment—whether that’s for stationery, printing, tech or coffee!
-
I’ve swapped paper handouts for digital ones and always try to cut back on waste when I’m on set or in the tutor room.
-
I’m starting gentle conversations about sustainability with productions I work with - especially where there’s a chance to lead by example for young cast members.
Coming up (the next 1–3 years):
-
I’m planning to switch to a fully electric vehicle when it’s time for a new car.
-
I’d like to get an environmental certification (like the Albert Supplier badge) to show I’m walking the talk.
-
I’ll keep pushing for greener options on productions - things like child-friendly recycling stations or encouraging low-waste lunches.
-
I’m building a travel plan that’s kind to the planet - more trains, less solo driving, smarter routes.
-
I’ll explore responsible carbon offsetting for any trips I can’t avoid, I have already offset 100% of this year's business mileage through Ecologi, Albert's recognised partner.
Looking ahead (3–5 years):
-
My big goal is to run as close to a net-zero business as possible - cutting emissions wherever I can and offsetting what’s left.
-
I want to connect with others in the industry who care about sustainability and share what I’ve learned.
-
I’m hoping to bring environmental awareness into some of the education work I do with young people.
-
I’d love to contribute to bigger conversations about making safeguarding practices greener and more sustainable.
-
And yes—no more paper piles! I’m aiming for a fully digital admin system

Carbon Offsetting

I take my responsibility to reduce my carbon footprint seriously. As well as making choices such as going paperless where possible and choosing responsible suppliers, I have looked at the largest contributor to my COâ‚‚, transport. In the medium term, I aim to move to fully electric.
In the interim, I have offset the emissions from my business mileage for this tax year by funding a plant in Brazil that captures methane from landfill sites.
Landfills emit methane as organic waste decomposes, a potent greenhouse gas with 34 times the effect of COâ‚‚ over 100 years. Methane emissions from landfills account for 12% of global totals. Capturing this methane and using it to generate electricity or heat prevents it from leaking into the atmosphere. This offers a twofold climate benefit: reducing harmful methane emissions and displacing the use of fossil fuels like coal, oil, or natural gas.
